Dans le dialogue U2L1 "have you got a TV in your room", Jake parle d'un monument célèbre de Londres : the Tower of London (la tour de Londres).

Here are a few photos of the Olympic Torch route and of the lighting of the Olympic Flame.

Click on the photos to visit the sites where I found them.

The torch:

The torch was lit in Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, at Hera's temple. The women were dressed in the antique way.

Then, several persons bore the torch from Greece to London. It is the Olympic Torch relay.

Finally, David Beckham drove the bearer of the Flame in his speedboat :

(enfin, David Beckham a conduit la porteuse de la flamme dans son hors-bord)

7 young athletes, instead of 1, lit the cauldron, and the flame spread to all the 204 copper "petals" (one "petal" for each competing country.) There are more photos on the site.

And then, the petals all rose slowly, majestically,  to join and create one big flame lighting this unforgettable night.

The lit cauldron, seen from inside, looks like fireworks or like an erupting volcano:

(Le chaudron illuminé, vu de l'intérieur, ressemble à un feu d'artifice ou à un volcan en éruption.)

When we went to England in July 2009, we stayed at a Bed & Breakfast, in a charming cottage. The landlady, Chris,  was very kind. She had a dog called Gemma and 2 Siamese cats. Chris and my daughter Cécile soon became great friends. Cécile was crazy about the dog, Gemma, and she spent a lot of time playing near the dog.

We spent a lot of time chatting in her garden. It was very hot, I remember one afternoon, the temperature rose to 29° C. Don't tell me that it's always raining in England.

She repaired all sorts of old things in her workshop (= atelier).

Every morning, we had breakfast behind that window, between the kitchen and our bedroom. Chris's breakfasts were delicious, eggs, bacon, tea, cereal, toasts & marmalade....

It really was a wonderful holiday!

2 years ago (= in 2009), we were invited to the marriage of my English friend James... in England. We travelled* by the ferry, the trip* lasted* approximately 2 hours.

(Vocabulary: to travel = voyager ; a trip = un voyage ; to last = durer).

A ferry is a very big boat, where you can take your car, your motorbike*, and even lorries*. Here, the ferry is in the harbour*, in Dunkirk (north of France).

The weather was nice, so we stayed* on the deck for a long moment, with my daughter. Do you recognize* your teacher? Yes, my hair was short at that time, but you can see that it was windy.

(Vocabulary: to stay = rester ; to recognize = reconnaître)

The sea was very quiet, and so beautiful...

2_ocean.JPG

Inside* the ferry, there was a sort of bar, toilets, a place with video games, and a young man came to entertain* the children : he told jokes*, asked riddles*, and in the end, he made animals with balloons for every child. Can you see the balloons in the little girls' hands?

(Vocabulary: inside = à l'intérieur ; to entertain = amuser, divertir ; a joke = une blague ; a riddle = une devinette)

This is what you see when you arrive : the white cliffs* of Dover* (England)

(Vocabulary: a cliff = une falaise ; Dover = Douvres).

DSCF3825.JPG

There are warehouses* and cranes* on the quay of the harbour.

(Vocabulary: a warehouse = un entrepôt ; a crane = une grue)4_Falaises_grues.JPG

Then, you go back into your car, you leave the ferry and arrive on the parking lot, just at the foot of the white cliffs.

Have a nice stay!

(= bon séjour !)
