Généralement, pour mettre un nom au pluriel, on ajoute un -s à la fin, en anglais comme en français.

Ex : a plane -> planes ; a boy --> 2 boys ; a cat --> 3 cats...

Mais bien sûr, il y a des exceptions, sinon ce ne serait pas rigolo...

A. LES MOTS DU COURS

1) MAN et tous ses composés deviennent MEN

          a man, a policeman, a fireman, a chairman....

     --> 2 men, 3 policemen, 4 firemen, 5 chairmen...

Même chose, bien sûr, avec WOMAN mais attention à la prononciation ! WOMEN se prononce <wimin>

     a woman, a policewoman, a firewoman

--> 2 women,  3 policewomen, 4 firewomen

2) One CHILD (prononcer <tchaïld>) devient 2 CHILDREN (prononcer <tchildreun>)

3) Les noms de certains animaux restent généralement au singulier ; pareil pour les mots "fruit" et "vegetable"

I went fishing with Daddy. I caught 1 fish, and he caught 10 fish. And there were a lot of sheep in the fields. For lunch, we had a lot of vegetable and a fruit salad.

Pour aller plus loin : on ne mettra ces mots au pluriel que si on veut préciser qu'il s'agit d'espèces ou de variétés différentes :

I caught 3 fish = j'ai attrapé 3 poissons en tout.

I caught 3 fishes = j'ai attrapé 3 sortes différentes de poisson (ablettes, gougeons et gardons, par exemple).

4) D'autres noms d'animaux, par contre, changent beaucoup au point qu'on ne les reconnaît pas forcément.

quelques règles générales

5) les mots se terminant par le son -f ( écrit -f, -lf, ou -fe) font leur pluriel en -ves

Ex : The wolf's wife is cutting half of a leaf with a knife for the first time in her life.

--> The wolves' wives are cutting halves of leaves with knives for the firt time in their lives.

6) les mots se terminant par "consonne + y" font leur pluriel en "consonne + ies"

Ex : There is a special variety of lily in this country.

--> There are special varieties of lilies in these countries.

7) Mots d'une syllabe comportant 2 "o" à la suite, les 2 "o" deviennent 2 "e" au pluriel.
